| | | | | | | | | You'll find here "musical arrangements": these are MIDI file recordings, mainly from video games, reproduced using better-quality synthesizers than those distributed with your computer's operating system. The purpose of these recordings being to demonstrate that MIDI files can actually sound very good when they're played on a nice synthesizer.
Unlike music files available in the My Music section, tracks presented on this page were not recorded from MIDI files I composed on my own; it can be either the original MIDI file extracted from the game, or an interpretation of the original music. In both cases, I associated the file to a set of instruments and sounds I designed myself, to obtain an original recording. Hence the name "musical arrangement"
And, to help bringing back your original gaming memories, I invite you to discover these arrangements as video slideshows, made from screenshots taken from the original game.
Used to think that MIDI music was ugly? Think again! |

| | | | | | | | | I used the free SynthFont software synthesizer to reproduce and record the tracks. This synthesizer makes use of SoundFont sound banks to reproduce MIDI instruments; SoundFont is a format designed by Creative Labs and E-MU for the Sound Blaster range of soundcards (AWE, Live!, Audigy, X-Fi).
To produce these arrangements, I took my own self-made SoundFont bank, designed across several years for my Sound Blaster! Live soundcard. This bank includes many famous sounds from the best synthesizers by Roland (D-50, Sound Canvas...), Korg (M1, X5...), Yamaha (MU, Clavinova...), Fairlight (CMI), E-MU (Emulator), Ensoniq, and many others.
The audio track has been recorded straight from SynthFont with my bank and the MIDI file, dry, without any added effect. I've only normalized the recording using Audacity afterwards.
The video part has been realized from screenshots taken from the game using Windows Live! Movie Maker. For some arrangements, the screenshots may have been taken from an enhanced version of the game, to achieve better image quality. Some games, such as DOOM or Duke Nukem 3D, supporting "packs" designed to enhance some parts of the game, like graphics. |
